This garden in the glorious walled Umbrian hill town of Spello, near Assisi, had been largely abandoned for many years, used only as a dog-run and occasional dumping ground for building materials.
Being in the centre of town, the garden is naturally overlooked by neighbours: a pergola running around three sides of the walled space will afford some shady privacy. A covered dining area outside the front door is a perfect place for summer meals. The new garden beds surrounding it brim with herbs which perfume the garden and can be used in the kitchen too.
