ROMAN TERRACE

2006

This huge Roman terrace – much used by the owners throughout the warmer months – was made more welcoming and homely by being divided into rooms: a breakfast room, a dining room and a 'lounging' space, complete with fountain and creeper-covered arbour in the corner, plus a utility area atthe less sunny northern end.

Situated on the first floor and overlooked by surrounding apartment blocks, the terrace was impossible to screen completely from prying eyes. However, a cane-covered pergola (with concealed perspex layer) over the dining table made meal times more private... and usable even if it rains; a canvas blind over the breakfast area gave some protection; and fast-growing creepers in large pots around the perimeter soon clambered over trellises, providing cool and colour.
